CADEX Max 50 -WheelSystem Review Speed, Stability & Confidence on Every Ride

CADEX Max 50 -WheelSystem Review Speed, Stability & Confidence on Every Ride

By Adrian McLeavey – GIANT Dublin / IrishCycleSport .

There's something special about fitting a new wheelset to your bike. Every cyclist hopes for a noticeable improvement, but it's rare to find a product that genuinely transforms the ride.

After spending several rides on the new CADEX Max 50 WheelSystem, paired with the CADEX Cotton Race 30mm tubeless tyres, I can honestly say these are among the most impressive wheels I have ever ridden.

Rather than relying on a single test ride, I wanted to evaluate them across very different terrain. My testing included a fast, predominantly flat route where maintaining speed was the priority, along with a longer rolling and hilly route through County Wicklow, allowing me to experience everything from steep climbs to fast technical descents.

After both rides, one thing became very clear—these wheels deliver an outstanding combination of speed, comfort and confidence.

Speed You Can Feel

The first thing that stood out was the incredibly low rolling resistance.

On flatter roads, the bike simply carried speed effortlessly. Accelerating felt immediate and once up to speed, the wheels maintained momentum beautifully. Every pedal stroke seemed to translate directly into forward speed.

Combined with the supple CADEX Cotton Race 30mm tyres, the ride feels incredibly smooth while remaining exceptionally fast.

It isn't just about outright speed—it's the feeling that the bike wants to keep rolling.

Tested on Real Irish Roads

The second test took place on one of my favourite training routes through County Wicklow.

Rolling climbs, rough road surfaces, exposed sections and fast technical descents provided the perfect opportunity to see how the wheelset behaved in real-world Irish conditions.

Despite weighing just 1250g, the CADEX Max 50 felt incredibly responsive on the climbs. Every acceleration out of corners and over short rises felt effortless, while the aero profile helped maintain speed across the rolling terrain.

What impressed me most, however, was the descending performance.

Outstanding Stability on Descents

Wicklow's descents are the perfect place to judge a wheelset.

Even at higher speeds the CADEX Max 50 remained remarkably composed. Crosswinds had very little effect and the bike tracked exactly where I wanted it to.

The confidence these wheels inspire is exceptional.

Rather than thinking about the wheels, you're simply concentrating on choosing your line and enjoying the descent.

That level of stability is something every rider appreciates.

Incredible Cornering Grip

The CADEX Cotton Race 30mm tyres deserve as much praise as the wheelset itself.

Running on the 22.4mm internal rim width, they create an incredibly supportive tyre profile.

The grip through corners is outstanding.

Whether sweeping bends or tighter technical corners, the bike feels planted, predictable and reassuringly stable.

Even on rough Irish road surfaces, the tyres absorb imperfections while maintaining exceptional grip.

Comfort Without Sacrificing Speed

Many cyclists still believe wider tyres are slower.

My experience couldn't have been more different.

The Cotton Race tyres smooth rough roads beautifully while maintaining incredible efficiency.

The ride feels faster because you're fresher, more comfortable and carrying more speed over imperfect road surfaces.

It's a combination that's difficult to appreciate until you experience it yourself.

Why These Numbers Matter

The wider 30mm external and 22.4mm internal rim dimensions are perfectly suited to modern 28–30mm tyres, improving rolling resistance, comfort and cornering confidence.

Add ceramic bearings, integrated carbon spokes and the highly efficient CADEX R3 hub system, and you have one of the most advanced road wheelsets available today.

Final Verdict

After testing the CADEX Max 50 WheelSystem on both fast flat roads and the rolling climbs and descents of County Wicklow, I'm genuinely impressed.

These wheels excel everywhere.

✔ Lightning-fast acceleration

✔ Only 1250g per pair

For riders looking to upgrade their road bike, the CADEX Max 50 is much more than a lightweight carbon wheelset. It transforms how the bike accelerates, climbs, corners and descends, making every ride faster, smoother and more enjoyable.

After riding them on two very different routes, I can confidently say this is one of the finest wheelsets I've ever had the pleasure of riding.

Ride Tested. Rider Approved.

Vlad watch Stage 4 ➡️ The story of Vlad Van Mechelen at 2026 Tour de France .

Vlad Van Mechelen has made a very encouraging start to the 2026 Tour de France, especially considering this is his Tour debut. His highlights so far include: Stage 4: Van Mechelen was part of the 34-rider breakaway that gained enough time to contest the stage victory. It was a strong, aggressive ride that put him in the spotlight for much of the day.   Although he didn’t finish on the podium, making the decisive break in a Tour stage is a significant achievement for a young rider and shows that his team trusted him with the opportunity.   After the opening mountain stage (Stage 3), he was sitting 75th overall , having ridden solidly through the first difficult days of the race.   At just 22 years old , Van Mechelen is widely regarded as one of Belgium’s brightest prospects. His role at this Tour is primarily to gain experience, support his team, and take opportunities in breakaways rather than challenge for the general classification. Stage 5 is shaping up as a day...
